A Day at Ormond Beach! Sharks Capture NSA Memorial Classic

Boy it was hotter than Death Valley at the NSA Memorial Day Classic.  The games ranged from complete shut-outs to contests that were more closely fought than two boxers in a phone booth.  In spite of the fact that our defense was more porous than the Titanic, we more than made up for it with big sticks Sharks win NSA Memorial at Ormond Beach 2014and stellar pitching.   The Sharks pulled off 5 in a row to win the whole shindig.  The Sharks outscored their opponents 42-14 and capped it off with a nail-biter against the Blazers00 winning 5-3.  The Sharks started off the tournament in dominating fashion by crushing the Crush 10-0 and burning the Blazers00 12-0.  The other seeding game found the Sharks behind in the last inning 6-2; however, the Sharks made a thrilling comeback scoring 5 runs to squeak by the Canes.  In bracket play, the Sharks ended up playing the Canes and Blazers00 again.  Beating a team two times in a row is a tough feat.  So kudos to the Sharks!

Sharks over Crush 10-0 - A fourth-inning 7-run rally sparked a blowout win for the Sharks. They scored in the fourth on an error, a two-run single by Anna, a passed ball, a single by Chelsea, an RBI single by Taco, and an RBI single by Sami.   The Sharks were led by Taco who went 2-3, drove in one and scored two runs. Brandi kept the Crush off the scoreboard for all four innings she was on the rubber. She pitched a shutout, allowing no runs on two hits while striking out five.  Overall, 2 hits apiece were delivered by the Sharks’ sluggers, Taco and Chelsea.  One hit apiece by Sami, Brandi, Marley and Anna.

Sharks over Canes 7-6 - The Sharks outlasted Canes squeaking out a 7-6 win.  Down 6-2, the Sharks managed to grab the lead after a strong fourth inning.  The Sharks tacked on a total of five runs on a two-run double by Brookie, an error, and an RBI single by Sami.  In was a back and forth affair with the Sharks committing 4 errors.  Nonetheless, the Sharks prevailed.

Sharks over Blazers00 12-0 - The Sharks blasted the Blazers00 with 11 hits to just one for the Blazers00.  The game ended on a mercy rule.  Brandi and AJ led the Sharks with 2 hits apiece.  One hit each was delivered by Chelsea, Taco, Taylor, Sami, Brookie, Marley and Anna.  The Sharks would ultimately face the Blazers00 in the Championship game.  And that one was a totally different game.

Sharks over Canes 8-5 - In bracket play, the Sharks beat Canes 8-5 in six innings  behind Mia, who went 2-3.  She singled in the third and fourth innings.  The Sharks never surrendered the lead after the third inning, scoring four runs on an RBI double by Chelsea Brown and three singles.  The Sharks pushed across two runs in both the fourth inning and the fifth. In the fourth, the Sharks scored on an RBI single by Sami.  Despite the huge lead, the Sharks squandered it away with multiple errors.  The Sharks held on to a 8-5 victory however.  Brookie had the hot bat of the game with 3 hits. Munchie, Taco, Chelsea, and Brandi had 2 hits apiece.  A single hit each was delivered by Anna, Marley, Sami and Taylor.  The Sharks had 15 hits in the game!

Sharks over Blazers00 5-3 - The Sharks finally toppled the Blazers00 in back-and-forth affair 5-3 in 7 innings of Championship play.  Taylor was a workhorse on the rubber for Deerfield Beach Sharks. She allowed only one earned run.  Of the 7 hits by the Sharks, 2 were from Chelsea while one each came from Mia, Taco, Brandi, Sami and AJ.   It was a tough win!  But the Sharks took the 1st place trophy…err…I mean medal home.

Outstanding Highlights of the Tourney

Brandi allowed zero earned runs for the tournament.

Taylor allowed only one earned run in the Championship game.

Five Sharks batted over .400 for the tournament

  • Chelsea and Brandi 0.500
  • Taco 0.462 (and she had a nice home run blast!)
  • Marley 0.444
  • Brookie 0.417

Mia was a ‘ball magnet’ at Shortstop; made outstanding plays
