Four “Go Get My Ball Home Runs” Not Enough at the Eckerd College Invitational

Sharks and FireThe Sharks scored 39 runs and had 52 hits this past weekend at the Eckerd College Invitational.  Four Sharks had ‘Go Get My Ball’ homers (Chelsea, Taco, Taylor and Marley). Heck, the Sharks had more offense than the Denver Broncos could muster in Super Bowl XLVIII!  But it wasn’t enough as the Sharks came up short against the Florida Fire 4-2 in the Championship game.  The Sharks defense made some spectacular plays.  Yet at other times, the defense had more glitches than the Obamacare website.  At times, I wanted to plead the 5th.  All in all though, they played some epic ball!

The Box Score

  • Sharks tied Tampa Mustangs 8-8
  • Sharks over Clearwater Bombers 7-1
  • Sharks tied the Bullets 5-5
  • Sharks over Bullets 8-1 (Bracket)
  • Sharks over Synergy 7-0 (Bracket)
  • Fire over Sharks 4-2 (Championship)

Sharks tied Mustangs 8-8

Taylor got on base two times in the game for the Sharks. She scored one run and had one RBI. She also had a nice triple in the first inning. The top of the first saw the Sharks take an early lead, 4-0. Mia kicked things off with a single. A groundout by Brookie then moved Mia from first to third. A few plays later, Mia stole home. The Sharks pushed more runs across when Chelsea and Taco scored on a two-run single by Lindsey.  Lindsey then scored on an RBI triple by Taylor.  However, the Tampa Mustangs scored five runs of its own in the third leading to an eventual tie.

Sharks over Bombers 7-1

A five-run explosion in the first inning lifted the Sharks to a 7-1 win in four innings over the Clearwater Bombers.  The Sharks were sparked by Taco and Taylor who teamed up for three hits and four RBIs.  The Sharks got one-run rallies in the third inning and the fourth. In the third, Taco hit a beautiful solo home run.  Now THAT was a hit!

Sharks tied Bullets 5-5

This is the type of game that drives coaches crazy.  The Sharks outhit the Bullets 8-7 but committed 5 errors. Yep, five.  Chelsea Brown racked up two RBIs with the biggest fattest home run she’s ever hit.  That ball is way over a 220 foot fence.  Instead of ‘Go Get My Ball’ it’s more like ‘Good luck finding that ball.’  Other hits were contributed by Lindsey, Taco, Brookie, Taylor (2), Brandi, and Sami.

Sharks over Bullets 8-1

Like night and day, Jekyll and Hyde, and boys and girls, the Sharks played a completely different against the Bullets in the first game of bracket play.  Thoroughly dominating the Bullets with a score of 8-1 and outhitting them 12-2, the Sharks finally played the way they can and should.  And the best part, there were no errors in the game.  Seven runs in the first three innings allowed the Sharks to put the game away early.  An RBI single by Taco during the first inning and a two-run double by Anna in the second inning supplied the early offense for the Sharks.  The Bullets’ lineup had no answer for Taylor.  She gave up just two hits, allowed no earned runs, walked one and struck out one during her five innings of work.  The Sharks added four more runs in the top of the third. A double by Taco ignited the offense, bringing home Lindsey and Chelsea. That was followed up by Taylor’s double, scoring Brookie and Taco.

Sharks over Synergy 7-0

Fifteen batters couldn’t locate Brandi as she threw a no-hitter against the Synergy.  She struck out five batters and walking one. She got #2 to strike out for the final out of the game.  The biggest inning for the Sharks was the fifth in which they scored five runs.  Lindsey racked up three RBIs on two hits for the Sharks. She singled in the first inning and doubled in the fifth inning.  Additionally, Taco, AJ, Marley, Brookie, Taylor and Chelsea each got a hit.

Fire over Sharks 4-2

The Championship game featured two very equally matched teams:  great hitting, pitching, and fielding.  The Fire outhit the Sharks 8-7; however, it was the three errors by the Sharks (with zero by the Fire) which was the difference maker in the Championship game.  Five of the hits by the Fire came from two players (#3 and #7).  Mia had the hot bat for the Sharks with 2 hits with Taco, Marley, Taylor, Brandi and Sami each with a single hit apiece.
